Hello! My name is Tavia Nguyen and I will be a senior in Fall 08. I am originally from Vietnam and I’ve been here in Fort Worth going on 15 years. Spanish will be my third language and hopefully Chinese will be my fourth because I love watching their tv shows. I am very excited and nervous about Cuernavaca because it’ll be first first trip out of the Texas.

Hello, everyone!
My name is Erin Leidlein, and I just turned 20 on Sunday! I’ve grown up in Arlington, where I was home-schooled through high school. Last fall, I fell in love with languages and international students when I started going to an International Student Bible study. Besides Spanish, I also informally study 한국어 (Korean). I am really hoping to meet some students at SLI from other countries! I basically spend every free moment with international students at UTA, especially ELI (English Language Institute) students, so I’m really excited to be one in Mexico~~I can’t wait to meet all of you! Hi everyone! I’m Martha Norwood. I’m a 21 year-old senior Spanish major at UTA. This trip will be my second time to Mexico but my first time studying abroad. This December I will graduate and I will begin a Master’s program in Speech Pathology at UNT next fall. I love to swim, watch movies, read murder mystery books, and go out with friends. I’ve been learning to salsa dance through taking Zumba, which is a Latin dance aerobics class that is offered here at UTA, and I’ve found that I really enjoy this type of dancing- hopefully I can learn more during our trip! Hello Everyone!! My name is Sabrina Johnson (but everyone just calls me Brie) and Im a senior at TCU in fort worth. Im only here for the summer and I’m very excited to be going with you all! The only part of Mexico I have ever been to is Cancun so I’m really looking forward to going to a part of the country where I will be able to see more of the culture and such. Hello! My name is Sheryl Bernardo and I am a current senior, majoring in Spanish and minoring in Math. I am 21, and have lived half of my life in Flower Mound, Texas. I moved to the US when i was 13, although during the last three years living there, I have been in and out of the US with my mom. When i was younger, my family would always visit a church in a town called Manaoag where Our Lady of Manaoag also known as Nuestra Señora del Santissimo Rosario de Manaoag is shrined. At times, I would always catch the older priest speaking in a different language during the blessing and it always took my interest. Come to think about it, it was old spanish! As of right now, I believe that the language use at churches is deteriorating since the number of the older priest are dwindling down as they are the last living manifestations of the Spanish colonization in the Philippines . I am very excited about this trip as I am ready to discover more about the culture and meet new people. I look forward in meeting everyone in two weeks!

I just completed my first week in Cuernavaca, at the SLI. This is so much more than I expected. Everyone here wants you to have the best experience possible and they go out of their way to help you. The instructors here are fantastic. They are completely tuned into the students and if you look lost, ill or just tired, they try to fix it. I had an instructor this week for grammar and when I looked as if I was in overload, she would change and begin to converse with me. She would tell me stories about her life and I would respond and she would gently correct my grammar. One last comment, this is the city of eternal spring. You will love the weather. It is warm enough to swim in the day and cool enough to sleep with the windows open at night.

Hi all! My Name is Ja’Dorian Tate (it sounds just like it reads.) I am from Port Arthur, Texas. After I graduated from high school, I moved to Austin and went to school at Concordia University for my freshman year. Private school was toooooooo expensive, so I moved to Lancaster and transferred to UTA. I am now senior undergraduate History major and Spanish minor. When I read Gloria’s paragraph, I thought to myself, “We must be soul sisters” lol. I to wish to learn the language well enough to use it in conjunction with my teaching certification. I am very excited about going on my first trip out of the country. I look forward to meeting you all.

Oops, I should clarifiy why I thought I wouldn’t get much out of going to San Miguel de Allende – I was only there for two weeks. But after the 3rd day the speaking became much easier, and so did the stress!!
